Full job description

Laboratory Safety Unit (LSU) is a central university unit under the Office of Vice-President (Research) that oversees safety and regulatory compliance matters pertaining to teaching and research laboratory activities. The LSU is seeking an enthusiastic and committed person to support the senior members of the unit in carrying out their job responsibilities in relation to the services, projects, and programs run by the LSU.

The successful candidate will take part in a variety of laboratory research safety and occupational hygiene programs and will be given the opportunity to receive appropriate professional development to gain relevant professional experience and qualify for different safety professional recognitions.

Duties

  • Implementing safety management programs in laboratories under supervision (e.g., biological safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, laser safety, laboratory design, pre-occupation check, risk management, research safety, etc.);
  • Conducting regular laboratory safety inspections and audits, and preparing reports;
  • Investigating laboratory-related incidents and accidents and preparing reports;
  • Maintaining the laboratory safety-related databases/systems/e-platforms;
  • Delivering the occupational hygiene program including respiratory protection, workplace hazard assessments, etc;
  • Conducting exposure assessments and evaluating health hazards upon request;
  • Providing professional safety advice on design of new laboratories and laboratory renovations;
  • Providing administrative support to the LSU daily operations and supervising a technical team to provide professional services; and
  • Performing any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Science/Engineering/Building Services/Occupational Health and Safety/Occupational Hygiene, or related disciplines;
  • At least 5 years of relevant working experience in tertiary institutions, statutory bodies, government agencies, or international-sized organisations with laboratory facilities is advantageous;
  • Knowledge of regulations governing controlled chemicals and experience in hazardous materials management would be desirable;
  • Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and excellent quantitative, computer (e.g. Power Apps, Adobe Cloud), and analytical skills; and
  • Processing relevant safety credentials such as CIH, CSP, CMIOSH, or CHMM is a plus.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for a written test.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
